Personal Injury Protection

User Rating: / 0

You cannot avoid the fact that traffic accidents can happen to the most experienced drivers so arranging a personal injury protection plan is really a case of common sense. We all have many responsibilities these days which we cannot dismiss, not to mention looking after our families as well. Although personal injury protection can be an insurance plan on its own, their personal injury protection is no reason it cannot be added to an existing policy. Unfortunately, this can be an expensive insurance policy to have and many families cannot justify the monthly expense when it is usually they who are most at risk.

Unfortunately however, it can be very costly in other ways if the cover is not appropriate or does not cover the intended items. Throughout most parts of America today, injury insurance has become required by law but the cover required seems to vary considerably from state to state. In Alaska for example a car driver will require ten times the amount of coverage that a driver in Florida will need. Many people take out personal injury protection plans even if they currently live in a state that does not require it by law.

Depending on the policy, cover can pay up to eighty percent of costs involved for the insured and any passengers they were carrying at the time. There are some expensive items covered by this plan, which will pay out even if the policy holder is to blame, including medical costs for the driver and people in the vehicle with him. Before you purchase this type of cover, you would be advised to take a look at your current policies and see whether or not the areas covered by the proposed plan are not already duplicated in other insurance plans. You may find for instance that any medical expenses or lost wages involved may already be covered within your existing insurance.

So, the good news is that in some cases, no further cover will be required whereas you may have to arrange a small policy in others. There are some other factors to consider though as to whether you actually need personal injury protection; one being your current driving record. If you carry passengers on a regular basis your health insurance might cover your own medical expenses, it won't however, cover those of your passengers (unless they are members of your family who are on your health plan). So if your personal injury protection policy does not cover your passengers, it is your responsibility to ensure they are protected.

Any passenger in your vehicle should feel safe so it is the driver's responsibility to ensure this is the case. If you live in a state that does not have mandatory personal injury protection you may want to add this into your portfolio. Many drivers find they only require minimal injury cover as they are middle aged, experienced drivers with a good record and already have an adequate health insurance plan in force. On the other hand, when you are young and just starting out and probably don't have much in the way of health and liability insurance, you will want to protect yourself, your family and your future by carrying as much insurance as you can afford.
